The Future? of the
Adyar Theosophical Society
Accountable
Leadership
Urgently
Required
The
General Council has abused its power
by
putting itself beyond accountability.
A new
leadership is needed, and fast.

Ideal
for General Council members, no need to
worry
about anybody trying to contact them.
Stories of discontent and
re-alignment abound from all over the International Society. The General
Council has its own self interest agenda and refuses to address any problems
within the Adyar Theosophical Society and may well be looking to the future
after the Society, as it is now known, has closed. Why should the General
Council bother to repair something that it intends to ditch.
Management has failed to
manage for years and the interests of members have never been of importance,
but it hasn’t been spelt out so brutally in the past as it is at present. The
current silence and isolation of the General Council has brought home to
members that they are considered of no value to the Theosophical Society ruling
elite. The use of the insulting term “BALLAST”
by International
Vice-President M P Singhal to describe the members, clarifies the true
position. The implication of the Ballast comment, coupled with the lack of
urgency indicated by the rhetorical question “Should we allow this downward
trend to continue?”, suggests that the leadership are considering a future
Society which dispenses with the membership and consists of a self appointing
elite supported by followers.
The term membership may still
be used in this new organisation but would not confer any rights to participate
in management. The new elite leadership would reserve the right to grant a
level of initiate membership to approved members and these would become the
future elite of the Society. This goes a bit farther than the original plan to
cheat the members out of voting rights in 2008, but the policy of separating
the leadership from the members and removing accountability has never been
renounced by the General Council.
The leadership must be aware
that the Adyar Theosophical Society is on the point of breaking up, and rather
than trying to prevent it, they are seeking to retain a power base consisting
of a centralised organisation over which they have absolute control, and to
which they are unaccountable. This new
Theosophical Society may retain some outward characteristics of the old one but
would function more like church.
The above scenario is only
presented as an idea for consideration but the current trend of events suggests
that this is the direction in which things are moving. Is there anyone out
there who still trusts the General council? Has anyone had a reply to questions
from either of the two electoral candidates or the General Council?
